Youths age 11-15 have different requirements than those 16
and older. Ages 16 and older may attend a youth (11-15) class but 11-15 may not
attend the adult class.
At this time I only offer the adult course.
This is an outline of requirements for any courses we offer.
DNR Adult Firearm Safety
Certification
Persons 16 years and older may take this certification
course.
- You must complete the required prior to attending the field/test day
- Step 1:
Complete the activity
"Using your Minnesota Hunting and Trapping
Regulations handbook"
.
Print out and show to the volunteer instructor at the field/exam session. - Step 2: Complete the Hunting dilemmas worksheet. Print out the questions, write your answers on a separate sheet of paper, and show to the volunteer instructor at the field/exam session.
- Step 3:
Log onto
HunterExam.com
and take the course, take the final exam and print a Field Day Voucher.
- Step 4: A written list of a basic survival kit as suggested in the HunterExam.com curriculum.
- Step 5: Attend and successfully complete the field/exam session.
You will be provided with a temporary certificate upon successful completion of the above steps. A certificate will be sent to you from the Safety Training office. Certification endorsements will also appear on your Minnesota resident driver's license or identification card when you obtain or renew it.

The online course from HunterExam.com can be viewed for free,
the test can be taken for free. You can take the test as often as you want for
free, but you will need to register on HunterExam and you must pay $24.95 to
HunterExam to receive the Field Day Voucher, you must posses and bring this
voucher to the Test/Field day, without it you cannot complete the field day
portion of the certification course and you will not receive a certification.

minnesotafse@charter.net to obtain
a workbook.
If you have internet access I do recommend browsing the
HunterExam.com
program.
What you need to bring/not to bring to field day
- Your pre registration from MNFSE
- Payment (cash/check made to MNFSE, or online payment receipt)
- A Birth Certificate or Driver Lic
- Students under age 18 MUST have parent or guardian with them during the field day
- The Voucher from HunterExam.com or the Home Study workbook
- Pen/pencil
- Wear appropriate clothing, you will be outside for a portion of the field day, rain or shine.
- DO NOT wear dresses/skirts, you will be in different shooting positions and on the ground on the range
- DO NOT bring any firearms/ammunition, we will provide these.
- DO NOT bring friends/family (as spectators) for those over 18 years, unless they are taking the course.
- Food/Beverage ( no alcohol)
- A good attitude
What to expect on Field day
Field day will be 3 hours
Class starts on time, don't be late.
Once you arrive you will fill out a registration form, provide payment and other
items as listed above.
There will be a brief discussion on range safety.
Half the class will start at the range portion of the field day and the other
half will attend the class portion and take a written test.
The class portion will just be a refresher to the material covered from
HunterExam and the test.
The range portion will involve shooting a 22 caliber rifle from different
shooting positions.

- A shotgun and 1 box shells (trap load) if you do not own a shotgun, try to borrow one or I can supply you with one.
- Eye/Ear protection

Pre-registration is required, maximum 5 students per class
Class will be 9+ hours ( classroom and trap shooting)

- Payment (cash/check made to MNFSE, or online payment receipt)
- A Birth Certificate or Driver Lic
- Under age 18 must have parent/guardian present
- A shotgun and 2 boxes shells (trap load) if you do not own a shotgun, try to borrow one or I can supply you with one.
- Eye/Ear protection
- Food/Beverage
